SOIL OR "TOPSOIL" COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT STRUCTURES
Manufactured soils are designed to improve the grow media by introducing the elements lacking in basic soil.
what'S IN YOUR SOIL?DIRT: A basic grow media lacking in nutrition and organics, and drains poorly; although it does contain micro-organisms essential for plant growth. SAND LOAM: Sand loam has improved drainage compared to dirt, but still lacks the nutrients and organics to sustain plant growth. CLASS "A" COMPOST ("Organics"): Over the last 10 years, local governments have introduced an organics collection in an effort to reduce our waste. In theory, it's a great idea but has many drawbacks:
All of these non-compostable items are in "Class A" compost. It's why the government tries to regulate the Parts Per Million. Ask yourself, if you have a choice, would you want your family handling, walking, planting or gardening in it? |
what'S IN OURSOur soil has 4 basic ingredients. We know where all of it comes from and is very easy to control quality. MUSHROOM COMPOST ("Organics"): Almost all of our nutrients and organics come from mushroom compost delivered to our production site. Before leaving the barn, mushroom compost is steamed to pasteurize the barn and the mushroom compost. This process is continual and ongoing with every load of mushroom compost sent to us. After all, they are growing a certified organic food in the compost. Once the farmer has grown their organic mushrooms the remaining material (compost) is a fantastic source of nutrients for our soil. VIRGIN WOOD FIBRE: This type of wood is primarily from deciduous (hard wood) and coniferous (softwood) trees; not recycled or reground waste wood (which could also have foreign materials in it). Our supplier of sawdust and wood shavings is a local mill that specializes in Virgin Wood. Virgin wood fibre is used to balance the nutrients and organics level (Carbon to Nitrogen ratio) for the best grow media. SAND: We only use excess river sand dredged locally from the Fraser River. To maintain navigation routes on the river, high points of sand are removed and sold at sand pits. This form of sand is called "Round Sand" - it has rolled and tumbled down the river from as far away as the Rocky Mountains and settled into the Fraser Valley basin. All of this movement has made the sand particles round, which keeps the soil loose, allows for good drainage and is easy to work with all the time. Sand from a gravel pit is "Shaped sand". It tends to be heavy, drains poorly and because of its shape allows the media pack. BASIC SOIL: We still use a small amount of basic soil. It provides structure to the soil that without it, it's simply not soil. The microbes that come with the soil help make the digestion process of carbon and nitrogen occur, which is a necessity for healthy plant growth. SPEC SOILS: We produce soils to meet BC NURSERY AND LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION (BCNLA) requirements. Soil analysis is done on a regular basis and copies may be obtained through our office. It's your choice! |

High Traffic Turf
High Traffic Turf is recommended for landscaping areas for high use (e.g., playgrounds ,backyards, etc.)
Also used where drainage is poor (in wet conditions root rot in grass and may cause turf to die if drainage is inadequate)
